Aching jaw

So, I got a filling on one of my upper teeth five days ago. The procedure went well. However, two days after the filling, I started getting sharp pain from the tooth. It’s now the fifth day and the problem got worse. I can’t open or move my jaw without getting any pain. Does anyone have any idea what could this be? Is this a symptom of nerve damage? How can I resolve this problem? Thanks.

Let me guess. It was a white plastic filling, right?

These things leak like crazy. The first thing to do is have the dentist try to reseal the edges of the filling by etching and bonding. If that does not work, it is probably root canal time.

Hello Dr. Henry.

Yes, it's a white filling. I'll have the dentist reseal it and hopefully it will turn out well. Is there any jaw exercises you can suggest? My jaw is very painful when I try to open my mouth. Thanks for your time.

The problem is, I don't know if you have one problem manifesting itself two different ways, or two entirely different problems, i.e. leaking filling and jaw muscles in spasm from injfection. If the latter, you can use warm heat pads and muscle massage as you try to open your jaw.

Next time, think twice before you demand white fillings on back teeth.
